About Me

Hello! My name is Shannon and this Ugga Mugga* blog is all about products and concepts for children and families. Here are what I would call my credentials:

1. I’m a freelance writer and homeschooling, stay-at-home mother of three children, August (13 years), Martha (10 years), and Hazel (8 years).

2. I research everything from sippy cups to healthy snacks to lovies like I’m developing a cure for cancer. But I make no excuses for this…my children are invaluable to me.

3. I love well-designed, natural and attractive products. I believe that everyone should surround themselves with colors and designs that make them happy and express their individual style.

4. I love to help people. I have quite a few friends who are parents that work outside the home. I love when they turn to me for quick information on articles and products they know I’ve researched (see number 2).

5. I crave information and education. I’ve had friends ask me to research things specifically applicable to them. And I’m more than happy to because I truly enjoy knowledge. And you never know when it will come in handy. I'm a life-long learner.

So, that’s where I’m coming from…a well-informed but selective place. I make no compromises for my children’s safety and well-being. And if I can assist you, please contact me at

* The blog is named after Daniel Tiger from Mister Roger's Neighborhood of Make-Believe. Daniel was my son August's favorite character who said, "ugga mugga" each time he rubbed noses with a loved one. My children and I have been ugga muggaing for years now and I thought it was time I invited the rest of you to join in and fall in love with well-designed and safe products and help calm the chaos of parenthood.

  1. Shannon...I must say your passion for product research is beyond human. I am 38 yrs old and am about to have our first child march 3rd - a girl. My wife and I love your site, as it has helped us identify helathy products to introduce to our new girl.

I do have a request - our room for the baby is approx. 10x13 - we have yet to find a organic rug to put in front of the crib. This rug would be ultra soft, high pile, and a place for us to enjoy baby (perhaps we will name her Ruby). Any thoughts? Just to stimulate your father was a great hunter and I always rolled around on bear skin/ lama skin rugs - we are not looking for a dead animal at this point - maybe for our future boy!

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts/web sites you may suggest.

Keep up your terrific are serving more people than you will ever know.

    Jason, Dallas, TX.

  2. Hello Jason,

Thank you so much for your kind words...and CONGRATULATIONS on your little girl on the way! I love the name was on our short list for naming our daughter Hazel. And although we didn't pick it, our daughter Martha has a doll named Ruby whom she loves...and I smile when I hear the name.

I'm glad you enjoy the blog and am happy to answer your inquiry on a rug. I've looked around a bit and found the following four options:

    1. A bamboo shag rug:

    2. A double-woven hemp rug:

    3. A faux sheepskin rug I've read good reviews about:

    4. A 100% wool rug:

You'll have to read about them and determine which will fit your daughter's nursery the best. But whichever one you choose, I'm sure you'll create many happy memories on it! What thoughtful parents you and your wife are already!

Please feel free to email me any other questions at uggamuggaATgmailDOTcom.

  3. Hi Shannon. I just found your blog through Twitter. I LOVE it! I'm subscribing to your feed now. Everything you review is what I'm trying to compile and offer to my customers (and I do now or have in the past offered many of the things you've reviewed, actually). I'm hoping you'll find the products I create to be equally interesting and worthy of review. I design my own nursing clothing (which, if you are as green as you seem you may still be able to use? I'm an extended nurser myself...) slash transitional clothing. You can see our spring line here: If there's anything in particular you would like to see, just let me know.
