Hello, my name is Shannon, and I am a worrier.
And I married a worrier. And we have three children to whom we unfortunately passed the gene on to. And we have two anxiety-ridden puppies. I wouldn't be surprised if even our fish worried from time to time.
That's the bad news. Now here's the good:
Because we're aware of our worrying tendencies, we have developed many proven methods to combat our concerns. We pray, practice yoga, and take hot chocolate breaths: in through your nose (to smell the make-believe cocoa) and out through your mouth (to cool down said cocoa). But when we have an especially big worry, or if I feel our family is out of synch, we call in the big guns: effervescent tablets (denture cleaner).
We fill a large bowl with water and unwrap a tablet for each worry (family's health, soccer game, money, new art class, siblings or spouses fighting more than usual, etc.) and we write each doubt, fear, trial and woe on a tablet. And then we drop them into the water and watch them melt away. Physically seeing the problem disappear has helped us to let go of things out of our control. I hope it will ease your family's anxiety as well.
Do you have any other tips to help overcome worry? If so, please share in the comments.
